Companies like Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Aptera Motors, Biogen Idec, Gen-Probe, Intuit, Johnson & Johnson, Kyocera Solar, Life Technologies, Motorola, Pfizer, Synthetic Genomics and QUALCOMM are located within the region.

Local universities and research institutions such as University of California, San Diego, and Scripps Research Institute have spun off nearly 200 biotech firms, and the region's biotech cluster employs an estimated 40,000 people with a $9.2 billion annual impact on the local economy.
