Offers Firms a Highly Advanced Manufacturing Base
San Diego County has 700 companies operating within the biotech industry and Baja has approximately 100. In fact, Mexico was the first developing country to patent biotechnology innovations. In 2007, Southern California received more than $1.79 billion in research funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), well over half of California's total ($3.1 billion). The Annual Economic Impact in the San Diego region, both direct and indirect, is $8.5 billion.
